Shear Connector Weld Stud Mechanical Properties
Structural and composite construction specifications commonly require Type B shear connector weld studs when load transfer between steel and concrete is required. These studs are an essential component in composite beam design and concrete anchorage applications. For product availability and sizing options, refer to our headed concrete anchors and shear connector weld studs category.
The table below summarizes minimum mechanical property requirements for shear connector stud Types A and B as referenced in structural design standards.
| Property | Type A | Type B |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 61,000 psi min. (420 MPa min.) | 65,000 psi min. (450 MPa min.) |
| Yield Strength | 49,000 psi min. (340 MPa min.) | 51,000 psi min. (350 MPa min.) |
| Elongation (% in 2 in.) | 17% min. | 20% min. |
| Elongation (% in 5x diameter) | 14% min. | 15% min. |
| Reduction of Area | 50% min. | 50% min. |
Type Definitions
Type A studs are general purpose studs of any type and size used for applications other than shear transfer in composite beam design and construction.
Type B studs are headed, bent, or otherwise configured studs in diameters of 3/8 in. (10 mm), 1/2 in. (12 mm), 5/8 in. (16 mm), 3/4 in. (20 mm), 7/8 in. (22 mm), and 1 in. (25 mm). These studs are used as essential components in composite beam design and concrete anchorage design.
